ਇੰਟਰਨੈਸ਼ਨਲ ਡੈਸਕ- ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਦੇ ਵੈਨਕੂਵਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਮੂਲ ਦੇ ਪੁਲਸ ਮੁਲਾਜ਼ਮ ਕਾਂਸਟੇਬਲ ਓਪਿੰਦਰ ਕੂਨਰ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਤਿੰਨ ਸਾਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਹਥਿਆਰਬੰਦ ਹਮਲਾਵਰ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਕਣ ਅਤੇ ਦੋ ਔਰਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਜਾਨ ਬਚਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਸਨਮਾਨਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ। ਵੈਨਕੂਵਰ ਪੁਲਸ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਗਈ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਅਧਿਕਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰੀ ਜਾਂਚ ਅਤੇ ਪੀੜਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਿਆਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ 'ਚੀਫ਼ ਕਾਂਸਟੇਬਲ ਸਿਟੇਸ਼ਨ' ਨਾਲ ਨਵਾਜਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।

On the morning of December 4, 2024, Constables Opinder Kooner, Riley Nelmes, Brian Rogger, and Michael Wu responded to a 911 call reporting that a man had entered a downtown restaurant and stolen liquor and knives. When they arrived moments later, the suspect had entered a convenience store across the street, where he stabbed a female employee in the head, back, and hand. The injured woman was trapped in the store with her attacker, along with a second employee. The officers entered the store and attempted to de-escalate. When that failed, a constable used a conducted energy weapon to no effect. As the man began to approach the two women, lunging at them with the knife, another constable discharged his firearm and stopped the threat. Medical care was brought in for the victims. Officers provided immediate first aid, but the suspect succumbed to his injuries. For their courageous and decisive actions to stop an active deadly threat, and save two women from further harm, the following officers were awarded the Chief Constable’s Citation: Constables Opinder Kooner, Riley Nelmes, Brian Rogger, and Michael Wu. ਇਹ ਘਟਨਾ 4 ਦਸੰਬਰ 2024 ਦੀ ਸਵੇਰ ਨੂੰ ਵੈਨਕੂਵਰ ਦੇ ਡਾਊਨਟਾਊਨ ਖੇਤਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਾਪਰੀ ਸੀ। ਪੁਲਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਹਮਲੇ ਬਾਰੇ  911 ’ਤੇ ਸੂਚਨਾ ਮਿਲੀ ਸੀ। ਸੂਚਨਾ ਵਿਚ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਕਿ ਇੱਕ ਸ਼ੱਕੀ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਨੇ ਇੱਕ ਰੈਸਟੋਰੈਂਟ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੜ ਕੇ ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਅਤੇ ਚਾਕੂ ਚੋਰੀ ਕੀਤੇ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਵਾਲੇ ਕਨਵੀਨੀਅੰਸ ਸਟੋਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਦਾਖਲ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ। ਉੱਥੇ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਇੱਕ ਮਹਿਲਾ ਕਰਮਚਾਰੀ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ, ਪਿੱਠ ਅਤੇ ਹੱਥ 'ਤੇ ਚਾਕੂ ਨਾਲ ਵਾਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਜ਼ਖਮੀ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਜ਼ਖਮੀ ਔਰਤ ਅਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਹੋਰ ਮਹਿਲਾ ਕਰਮਚਾਰੀ ਹਮਲਾਵਰ ਨਾਲ ਸਟੋਰ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਫਸ ਗਈਆਂ ਸਨ।

ਮੌਕੇ 'ਤੇ ਪਹੁੰਚੇ ਕਾਂਸਟੇਬਲ ਓਪਿੰਦਰ ਕੂਨਰ, ਰਾਈਲੀ ਨੇਲਮਜ਼ , ਬ੍ਰਾਇਨ ਰੋਜਰ  ਅਤੇ ਮਾਈਕਲ ਵੂ  ਨੇ ਸਟੋਰ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਦਾਖਲ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਸਥਿਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਾਂਤ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕੀਤੀ। ਜਦੋਂ ਗੱਲਬਾਤ ਨਾਲ ਗੱਲ ਨਾ ਬਣੀ ਤਾਂ ਇੱਕ ਅਧਿਕਾਰੀ ਨੇ ਇਲੈਕਟ੍ਰਿਕ ਹਥਿਆਰ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕੀਤੀ, ਪਰ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਹਮਲਾਵਰ 'ਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਅਸਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਇਆ। ਜਿਵੇਂ ਹੀ ਹਮਲਾਵਰ ਨੇ ਚਾਕੂ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਦੋਵਾਂ ਔਰਤਾਂ ਵੱਲ ਝਪਟਣ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕੀਤੀ, ਤਾਂ ਇੱਕ ਕਾਂਸਟੇਬਲ ਨੇ ਗੋਲੀ ਚਲਾ ਕੇ ਖ਼ਤਰੇ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਕਾਮ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਗੋਲੀ ਲੱਗਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਅਧਿਕਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਤੁਰੰਤ ਜ਼ਖਮੀ ਔਰਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਡਾਕਟਰੀ ਮਦਦ ਪਹੁੰਚਣ ਤੱਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਇਮਰੀ ਇਲਾਜ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਮਲਾਵਰ ਨੇ ਜ਼ਖਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਤਾਬ ਨਾ ਝੱਲਦਿਆਂ ਦਮ ਤੋੜ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਅਧਿਕਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਜਾਨ ਦੀ ਪਰਵਾਹ ਕੀਤੇ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਦੋ ਔਰਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਜਾਨ ਬਚਾਉਣ ਅਤੇ ਵੱਡਾ ਖ਼ਤਰਾ ਟਾਲਣ ਲਈ ਇਹ ਵੱਕਾਰੀ ਸਨਮਾਨ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
